US ARMY
My service was from Feb. 1963 to Feb. 1966. I went to the US Army Southeastern Signal School for Radio Relay and carrier systems. I went to Southern Germany (Heilbronn) to Bandenderhof Kaserne. I was assigned to the 26 Signal Bat. Co. D. We provided communications for the Ordnance Company (101Ord Battalion 23 Ord Co.) that was assigned to that Kaserne. There were only two companies each on this small Kaserne. The Ordnance Company supported a local Missile base called Camp Red Leg, about 3 miles away (the Germans called it Waldheide). Camp Red leg had 2 of 8 Redstone Missiles deployed to West Germany with Nuclear Warheads; these were changed to Persing 1 later on. My unit was reassigned to Ludwigsburg Germany after Operation Big Lift; we were renamed as the 1st Signal Battalion. I was then sent to a fixed communication site at Schwabisch Hall (Dolan Barracks); we shared this site with the 34th Signal Battalion which had a large operation. I spent 1 ? years there before returning to Ludwigsburg. Note: All of the above have been torn down and nothing exists anymore, everything written above can be found on the internet today.
After leaving the service I went to work for a DOD contractor for the next 32 years and worked in the Electronic Warfare area with all branches of the services (almost like never leaving the service). Most of my work was with the US Army and Air Force Special Operations. I retired in 2001 and enjoying the QUIET LIFE.
